True colours for the new year?

Every year in December, stylists, fashionistas and designers hold their breath an await the announcement by Pantone of the colour for the coming year. The colour chosen is supposedly selected to represent a specific mood or feeling and is a prediction of what the general population will be drawn to, although often the choice has proven to be contentious. This carefully chosen colour will then determine everything we see on the high street, in our homes and even in the food we eat. This year, and only for the second time in its twenty year history, Pantone has named two colours. The reason for this many believe, is to be representative of the tough year that we have all just experienced and the hope for the future. The colours selected are Ultimate Grey and Illuminating (bright buttercup yellow)

There is much scientific evidence that supports the impact of colour on our overall health and wellbeing, as a Qualified Colour Therapist, I myself often work with colour as a healing modality with my own clients. All colour is energy and each colour has its own vibration. On the surface grey can be deemed to be a boring, lack lustre even depressing colour whilst yellow is the colour of joy and optimism so perhaps the perfect representation of 2020 and the hope we all have for 2021. Lets take a look a little deeper at the spiritual meaning of each colour.

Grey is the colour of compromise and control. It is practical, solid and reliable, hence the saying "solid as a rock". It has a peaceful, relaxing and soothing presence. Grey avoids attention but offers a calming, mature and practical view. On the negative side, grey can be pessimistic, undecisive and unemotional. If Grey is your favourite colour, you are practical, calm and content to live a simple life. If you dislike grey, you find routine boring and prefer a black or white approach to right.

Yellow is a cheerful energetic colour packed full of optimism and happiness. It is a colour which brings fun and joy to the world. It inspires thought and curiosity and inspires enthusiasm and confidence. On the negative side, yellow can signify cowardice ( "yellow-bellied"), indecision and a big ego. If yellow is your favourite colour, you are a bundle of fun, confident and creative. A true individual, who loves nothing more than spreading sunshine wherever you go. If you dislike yellow you are practical and down to earth and dislike change. You are not impulsive and like to "look before you leap".

Love them or loathe them, for me these two colours certainly represent the current climate. Lets hope in 2021, we achieve a little less grey and a lot more yellow!

Love and Light
