Put your best foot forward

Feet! love them or hate them, one thing is for sure in the world of chakra points, your feet chakra have an important role to play. Although classified as one of the minor chakras in the human energy system, they have a vital role to play in creating a strong connection to Mother Earth.

Smaller than most chakra points (usually between 5 -7 cms when fully opened) they can be found in the center of the arch on the soul of each foot. The colour most associated with them is brown and they are directly connected with the Root chakra and other minor chakras within our legs. In a physical sense, the foot chakra is actually a split energy center, with each half sitting in the arch of each foot. However regardless of whether the feet are together or not, the points are always linked and whole.

In traditional chakra teachings, the Root chakra is considered to be the grounding point of the energetic system. This is in fact not entirely correct due to the fact that the Root chakra has an additional very important function as an "energy transformation point". In simple terms if you could see the return flow of energy coming down from the Crown chakra, you would see that energy shift and change as it passes through each gate (chakra). Starting with the higher, lighter and faster energy within the upper 3 chakras, it moves down and passes through the bridge (heart chakra) into the lower 3 chakras, becoming denser and slower. As the energy reaches the Root chakra, it is converted down to its slowest point in order that it can be dispersed quickly and easily into the earth. As the energy conpletes this transformation it becomes "earth based energy", which is almost undetectable and is the reason why many believe that the Root is the end of the major energy centres.

What in fact happens is that this concentrated stream of "earth based energy" is passed from the Root chakra to the Feet chakra and swirls around until it can be returned to the earth. This movement at the foot chakra is important as any blocks within this chakra will result in a build up of blocked energy that cant flow freely into the earth. The feet chakra are of course also vital in the reverse role of bringing energy into the system from the earth to replenish and nourish.

A clear and open foot chakra will have little or no obvious swirling energy at all and the energy will be passing in and out freely. Individuals with a balanced foot chakra will be able to remain easily grounded and has no difficulty on maintaining focus on the mundane. They integrate well with earthly structures and energy systems and are usually very healthy as the earth-based energy can pass quickly out of the body's energy system and take most of the built-up negativity out of the system before it has a chance to do any harm and possibly manifest as an illness.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms your foot chakra might be blocked.

  • Feeling disconnected and disoriented.

  • Healing slowly.

  • Insomnia.

  • Feel confused and can’t seem to easily work out what you want.

  • Spaced out, especially when doing meditation or other forms of spiritual connection.

  • Full of ideas and feel creative but either can’t make a decision or can’t follow anything through from concept to completion.

  • You seem to lose the benefits of energy healing, chiropractic adjustments or acupuncture treatments very quickly.

  • Feel restless.

  • Suffer from nightmares.

  • Feel exhausted even after a good night’s sleep.

So how do we keep the energy flowing freely within our feet chakra? Here are a few simple tips.....

  • Mindfully walk bare feet on grass. This means that you bring your full attention to each step you take and be in the moment of connecting with the ground.

  • Stand bare feet on the ground. Imagine your feet chakra spinning and opening. Imagine roots coming out of your feet grounding you deeply to Mother Earth.

  • Those who are fond of crystals can use grounding crystals to open feet chakras. Some of the grounding crystals are Hematite, Black tourmaline, Dalmatian Jasper, Blue Kyanite, Red Jasper, and more. Fill a tub or bucket with lukewarm water. Place some grounding crystals in the tub. Now place your feet in water tub and just play around with your crystals with your feet.

  • Use an essential oil such as Sandalwood or Ylang Ylang. Dilute the essential oil and then apply a small drop of the diluted oil to the sole of each of your feet using a clockwise circle motion.
