For many people, journaling has become a way of life. Everywhere you look there is some helpful article or book that tells us of the importance of journaling. But if the idea of writing down your innermost thoughts leaves you stumped or you are simply wondering where you are going to find the time in an already jam packed day to lose an hour or two in contemplating meditations, fear not! Journaling doesn't have to be complicated or difficult. You don't need to write endless pages and you don't need to include complicated rituals in order to make it count. If you are a journaling newbie or even someone who has tried and given up before, read on for my top tips.
Where do I write? First things first, you DONOT need an expensive journal. Its nice to treat yourself to a pretty notebook that appeals to you but at the end of the day, its what you write not what you write on.
When to write? - Ok, so this is usually the big stumbling block for people. The fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter when you do this, for some people it works best as part of their morning routine, for others its the last thing they do at night. The point here is to really consider what works for you and your life. Journaling shouldn't become another thing to do on your never ending job list, it shouldn't feel like a chore! So simply choose a time that works for you.
How often? - This really follows on from my previous point and again there are no hard and fast rules. Like so many things in life, its about quality not quantity, so if you can only commit to 1 or 2 times a week but this is quality time that you can really connect with yourself then go for it!
What do I write? - Ah! the million dollar question and probably without doubt the biggest stumbling block that most people face. Picture the scene, you've made the time, you've got your beautiful new notebook and your special pen and you are looking at a shimmering blank piece of paper.....cue the writers block!
The quick answer to what to write is, whatever you want. But for most people this just ramps up the pressure and instead of simply free writing, they end up with a very considered piece that doesn't represent any form of connection with themselves. That is why I personally love using "Journal prompts". These are a list of questions that you can work with based on what you feel drawn to. The best way to work with them is to look through the list and see which question resonates with you at that time. Then simply write the question at the top of your page, close your eyes for a moment, take a couple of deep breaths and then just begin to write. You may find you only manage a few sentences, or even a few words. You might feel compelled to draw a picture or image or you may write page after page. Just go with it until you are done.
5. What do I do afterwards? - Once you have finished writing, it is always a good idea to read back through what you have written and just take a little time to reflect. Look for the lessons you can take from what you have written or the messages or guidance that it may be offering you. Remember to read it without judgement, there is no right or wrong. This is how you feel, it is what you think and that is what is important.
